Additionally, a certification is needed through the Alabama Department of Education.

3 Steps: How to Obtain Your CDL and Become a School Bus Driver in

Step 1: Obtain Your Commercial Driver’s License

The first step in becoming a school bus driver is obtaining a CDL. Getting this license from a reputable school will set you up for a successful career. The course generally includes a four-week in-person training where you’ll learn theory, vehicle inspection, braking and safe road training. Most reputable schools will train students on manual transmissions so students are not limited to one specific type of vehicle after graduation.

Following the four-week instruction, you’ll put what you learn to the test with skills tests. The Federal Government also requires all license holders to undergo a DOT physical, a pre-employment drug screen and Medical Certificate. A reputable school will be able to conduct these tests and refer you to a proper physician.

Step 2: Complete Training with Local School System

After receiving your CDL, you’ll need to complete a minimum of four hours of training from local school system transportation officials. This step is completed after obtaining your license, but before you enroll in the State Department of Education School Bus Driver Certification Course. You’ll need to produce a signed certificate from completing this training before you are scheduled for a performance test.

Step 3: Attend the State Department of Education Bus Driver Certification class

Next, you’ll need to attend a 12-hour new State Department of Education Bus Driver Certification class. This class is taught over the course of three days with a portion of the fourth day dedicated to performance testing. At the end of the three-day course, a written exam is given. A score of at least 80% is needed to pass.

The school bus driver performance test covers three areas:

#1 Pre-trip inspection of bus

#2 Basic skills control test. This covers straight-backing, off-set backing and alley docking

#3 Road test with at least 80% mastery

All bus driver certificates expire annually on December 31.

In order to keep your license, and be recertified for the next year, you’ll need to attend a four-hour recertification class. All school systems schedule these courses, and they take place between January 1 and November 15. It’s a good idea to ensure you complete this course, because if not, you’ll have to repeat the new driver training.

Ready to Take the First Step to Become a School Bus Driver?

The trucking industry is a vital portion of our nation’s economy, including moving more than 70% of all freight in the country. Truck drivers are always in demand, and salaries and benefits tend to be attractive as a result.

Though many of those considering CDL school begin their search by looking for the “cheapest” CDL school in their area, they’re usually surprised to learn that they can go to a highly reputable school without paying much, if anything, out of pocket.

If you take anything from this article, let it be that attending the “cheapest” CDL school isn’t necessary.

A successful career as a truck driver begins with a quality education to obtain a commercial driver’s license. You want educators and trainers who genuinely want you to succeed.

Here’s Exactly Why You Don’t Need to Attend the Cheapest CDL School Near You

Believe it or not, paying for CDL school out of pocket it’s very common. In reality, most students don’t pay much, if any, up front cost.

There are multiple ways to attend CDL school without breaking the bank, and that’s exactly why you should choose your CDL school based on their ability to prepare you for your new career and help you be successful going forward. Not based on the amount of money they charge to attend.

Student Loan Options – Pay Over Time

Did you know that some CDL schools offer a flexible student loan option, also called an income share agreement? An income share agreement is a flexible alternative to a traditional student loan where you only make payments when you have a job.

Rather than borrowing money, you commit to pay a set percentage of your income over time. Payments will adjust as your income grows and will always stay affordable. You can use this calculator tool to determine the total payments you would make.

Carrier Programs: Free School Plus Secured Job Placement

Another option in paying for CDL school is through a carrier program. This is a popular option for many students.

This means that the student has secured job placement with a carrier on the contingency that they finish CDL school and obtain a license. With this type of arrangement, students can enjoy a company-paid education, knowing they have employment lined up after graduation.

Federal Grants for Those Who Qualify

While government grants aren’t available year-round, when funding is available, many students are able to take advantage of these grants.

By helping to fund job training and education for eligible candidates, the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) is legislation aimed at helping Americans get onto a new career path and be successful. Under this grant program, students don’t pay a dime for their education.

Scholarship Programs: Let Your School Invest in You

Some schools believe so much in their students and want them to succeed that they set up programs to award those who have serious motivation and determination.

For example, CDL of AL, offers their “DEPTHS Program.” Under this specific program, CDL of AL accepts one student each month to attend the full training course with their entire tuition covered under the DEPTHS Scholarship.

Still think you need to find the cheapest CDL school near you?

Sometimes in life, going the cheapest route can end up costing you more in the long run. When you choose a quality education to obtain your CDL license, you’re setting yourself up for long-term success.

Finding a CDL School That Checks All of Your Boxes

When you’re looking for a CDL school to advance your career, look no further than CDL of AL.

There are so many benefits of attending a reputable school that cares about its students.

The course offered at CDL of ALis the FMCSR 380.503 Entry Level Driver course. This full four-week course includes theory training, skills training and skills testing.

You’ll be trained on a manual transmission so you won’t be restricted by law when you graduate. This also means you’ll have more career opportunities. We also test and train with air brakes, keeping you open to more career options. Some schools use only automatic transmissions which restrict students once they complete the coursework.

As an added bonus, we help our students gain job placement while they’re still in school. You won’t likely find this with most other “value” schools designed to pump out licenses.

Our instructors have years of training and do this because it is a passion- they could make far more money on the road, but genuinely want students to succeed.

Our program is also reputable. Years of student success and qualified instructors combine together to give students the tools for a long-lasting and rewarding career in the trucking industry. This leads to our graduates getting job placement before graduation with top companies across the nation.

If you have considered a career as a truck driver, you can apply online today!

CDL of AL is thrilled to now offer a flexible student loan option, also known as an Income Share Agreement, to students looking for alternate ways to pay for CDL School.

The Income Share Agreement is the perfect, flexible alternative to student loans. How this works is instead of borrowing money, you commit to pay a fixed percentage of future income for a period of time. This payment will always be affordable and will adjust according to your income at the time.

“We are so excited to be able to start offering a new flexible student loan option that will give more students the ability to afford CDL school and earn their commercial drivers license,” says Chase Pate, Owner of CDL of AL. “While government grants are not always available, we found it essential to find other opportunities for potential students to gain financial support they need to make this life-changing career move.”

The Details on the Income Share Agreement through Mia Share

Income Share Agreements (ISA) allow for the student to only have to pay when they have an income. The payments are always fluctuating as your income changes which allows flexibility year around.

Unlike some other options that are available, with ISA there is no application or hidden fees. Students also will not have any payments to make while they are taking the course because they are not making an income. Follow your dreams and buy into CDL of AL the way we buy into their students.

We believe the option of paying for CDL school through an ISA gives each student the freedom and opportunity that they deserve. It also boosts your confidence and allows you to work the way that you have always wanted to.

Apply for the Flexible Student Loan Option Today

Applying for the flexible student loan option will result in a credit check. Don’t let this scare you because there is no obligation even if you apply. On our website there is a calculator to allow each student to see how an ISA works. This allows you to see what you would be paying and what you might be making and puts it into the real world so you know exactly what you are getting.

While it can depend on a number of factors, earning your CDL will typically take about 4 weeks depending on the program you choose and the availability.

The Class A CDL exam is a test that you can easily pass – just as long as you’ve done the preparation. There are many training techniques to consider when getting ready to take your exam, and throughout this article, we’ll go through a few helpful tips that should make acing the exam a good bit easier.

Take a Reputable Course

Attending a reputable CDL training course is very helpful because you can sit down and learn from someone who knows the test well. You will also be able to talk to others who are preparing for the same test. Most classes also offer hands-on training which can go a long way when you are preparing. Make the most of your class and pay attention to each lesson. Even when you might think you know something there is always more to learn when preparing.

Study, Study, and Study More

The number one thing that you can do to best prepare for your exam is study. Be sure to get the manual and try to know it forward and backwards. Find a place where you are not distracted and sit down with your book. Take notes and review the notes each day for about 30 minutes on top of your studying. This will help you remember what you learned in the past as well as learning new material each day. Take plenty of notes and do not be afraid to read your manual out loud. Find out how you study best and take your time and learn the material.

Understand the Material

There is a difference in knowing and understanding the material. Knowing the material means that you have memorized a definition and could find it on the exam. While understanding the material means you can apply it as well as knowing the definition. Being able to apply material is crucial to passing the CDL exam. So when you are studying be sure to do more than just memorize terms and definitions. Know when and how each term is used and you will surely be ready for the exam.

Go Ahead and Book Exam Date

We recommend that you go ahead and book the date of your exam in advance. This way you know that you can see the end goal as well as when you need to be ready. If you don’t do this it is easy to get off track and put it aside. When you set your date be sure to give yourself plenty of time to study and be prepared. As the exam date is coming closer you will be ready because you gave yourself time and knew when it was coming.

Stay Calm and Confident

This is something that not everyone is able to do but you should be able to. As long as you have done the preparation then you know you are going to do good. As long as you stay calm and trust what you have studied you will remember and do well. Being confident can also go a long way on this exam so don’t lack confidence. Trust yourself and do not overthink things like simple questions that you know the answers. Do not get tripped up if you don’t know one question just move on to the next.

These are just a few suggestions that we have seen work in the past that should be able to help you. Passing the CDL exam is very doable with the right practice and studying. If you put in the effort and do the things listed above you will surely be able to pass the exam.

When considering obtaining your commercial drivers license, you may have a hard time deciding exactly which CDL you want to obtain. Some of the most common questions we get are about Class A versus Class B commercial drivers licenses.

Why choose Class A or Class B CDL? What’s the difference anyway? Is one better than the other?

Class A CDL vs. Class B CDL

Keep reading to learn the difference between a Class A CDL and a Class B CDL and find out which commercial drivers license is the best option for your career.

What is a Class A CDL?

If you are looking for a fulfilling career driving a semi-truck, a Class A CDL may be the best choice for you. A class A CDL is the most common type of commercial drivers license. A Class A license is required to operate a wide variety of vehicles that have a gross weight of over 26,000 pounds and a towing capacity of over 10,000 pounds. Class A CDL allows for the operation of 18-wheelers, flatbeds, livestock carriers and more.

With a Class A CDL, you may drive interstate or locally, long-haul or over-the-road. You must be over 21 years of age to receive your Class A license. Because Class A can be an all-encompassing license if you have the right endorsements, it allows for the operation of Class B vehicles as well.

What is a Class B CDL?

A Class B CDL allows for the operation of a single vehicle with a gross weight of over 26,000 pounds but a towing capacity of no more than 10,000 pounds. Examples of vehicles you can drive with a Class B license include buses, garbage trucks, delivery trucks, dump trucks and more.

For a Class B CDL, you must be at least 18 years of age. Additionally, a Class B CDL only allows drivers the ability to operate within the state in which they obtained their license.

Which CDL is right for you?

There are advantages to having both a Class A CDL and a Class B CDL.

A Class A CDL allows you to have more opportunity and variety in your career and is the best choice if you are looking for a long-term career as a driver.

If traveling the country appeals to you, Class A CDLs allow for interstate travel. Additionally, Class A CDL jobs typically have a higher starting salary and earning potential.

On the other hand, a Class B CDL is a great option for those who see truck driving as a short-term job rather than a career.

This license is a great choice for those looking for a job as a delivery driver, bus driver or other local trucking jobs.

Are you interested in furthering your career by obtaining your commercial driver’s license? Obtaining your CDL from CDL of AL is a great way to advance your career while ensuring you have the job security you need in these uncertain times.

If obtaining your CDL is something that interests you, keep reading to learn the basic requirements necessary to obtain your CDL so you can hit the road as soon as possible!

Alabama CDL Requirements: Let’s look at the basics

To begin the CDL process, you must have a valid US driver’s license for at least a year. You must also be able to prove that your ability to drive any form of motor vehicle is not disqualified, suspended, revoked or cancelled. We’ll also note that having a felony will not prevent you from attending training—all applications will be considered.

Drug Screen Requirements

You will be required to pass a drug test in order to attend CDL training. The test can detect even the smallest traces of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine, amphetamines and more. Furthermore, some employers administer random drug tests throughout the licensed driver’s employment.

DOT Medical Card

You will need a Department of Transportation medical card. You can obtain this by passing a physical exam by a licensed medical examiner. This exam may include screening of any current medications, blood pressure, blood sugar, cardiac, hearing and even sleep issues. You must also pass a vision test and a color blindness test in addition to a physical exam.

Age Requirement

To obtain your CDL in Alabama, you must be at least 18 years old. If you intended to drive commercial vehicles across state lines or haul hazardous materials, then the age requirement increases to 21.

Necessary Documents

To get your CDL, you will need to provide certain personal documentation. This may include but is not limited to:

Proof of identity and U.S. legal presence

Proof of age

Proof of residency

Social security card

Driving history

These requirements may seem excessive, but they are all to ensure your safety as well as others on the road. In order to attend training, we must make sure that you’re perfectly capable of operating these large commercial vehicles, and that includes having good vision and being in good health.

Once we confirm that you meet all of the above requirements, you’ll have the opportunity to complete your course with CDL of AL before taking both a written and skills test. Once passed, you will receive your CDL and begin your trucking career!

If obtaining your CDL is a top priority, contact us to get started today.
Why More Class A CDL Drivers Will Be Needed in the Comings Months

As the economy begins to recover, the demand for Class A CDL drivers continues as an increased truck driver shortage is expected in the coming months.

The trucking recession of 2019 and early 2020 was met with an unprecedented challenge in the emergence of COVID-19. According to the American Trucking Association, the USA is facing a shortage of nearly 65,000 drivers, with the number expected to triple over the next six years. The driver shortage has caused a more competitive market, as companies fight to keep operations running and their products on the shelf.

The winter months are the busiest for trucking, and the upcoming holiday season will not be the first to suffer a driver shortage. Due to the effects of COVID-19 and social distancing recommendations, many big-box retailers are planning an early launch for their holiday deals that usually kick off on Black Friday, with some retailers kicking off their sales as early as October.

Online shopping is historically at its highest during the holiday season, and this year is expected to be the busiest online shopping season to date. According to Ware2Go CEO Steve Denton, “With most supply chains already working above their 2019 peak shipping volumes, we recognize that this holiday season will be unlike any the industry has seen before.”

The increase in holiday shopping brings a strong demand for Class A CDL drivers. As countless miles are driven and even more packages are handled, many truckers work seven days a week to ensure their deliveries arrive on time. DHL predicts 30-50% more volume this holiday season than 2019. As a result, the shortage has many companies struggling to find hires in the weeks before the season begins.

One cause for the shortage in drivers is due to difficulty in finding new recruits. An estimated 1,386,000 people in the trucking industry remain on unemployment due to layoffs or other effects of COVID-19, compared to 587,000 in August of 2019. The effects of COVID-19 have pushed some drivers into an early retirement. As the average age of drivers rises to 55, the need for young drivers is high.

However, many driver schools are facing challenges of social distancing measures. School closings have made license renewals and getting new licenses difficult as some state offices have closed during the pandemic. An estimated 71% of fleets stopped training programs, and the number of open schools dropping by about 40%.

The need for entry level drivers is and has been issue to not only our national but also our local economies. While navigating Covid-19 shutdowns and implementing safety protocols has been challenging, we understand how vital our role in driver capacity is. Ultimately, when a student leaves our campus with a class “A” license, there is still additional company training time before they are a first seat driver capable of making deliveries. This logistical process is one that we often take for granted and has been our motivation to keep going and train the next round of drivers.

For many drivers, the shortage has resulted in a sizeable pay increase. In an attempt to combat the shortage, one of the country’s largest trucking firms, is paying drivers upwards of $90,000 with up to $10,000 in signing bonuses.

Companies have offered extra incentives for team truck drivers as well. Two-person driver teams allow for a faster, steadier flow of product because when one driver reaches the federal driving limit, their teammate can immediately take over. Moreover, CDL drivers who opt for a teammate will most likely receive a bump of a few cents per mile, resulting in up to $7,000 annual pay increase per driver in most cases. Smaller companies are expected to follow suit.

Apply for Your CDL Training Today and Get Paid to Keep the Economy Running

With companies striving to keep products on the shelves during the pandemic and the holiday season right around the corner, more Class A CDL drivers will be needed to help the economy push forward.

Truck Driving School

Despite all of the preparation you received behind the wheel and in your Mobile, AL driving classes, you must pass an exam to become a licensed professional driver. You will need to be confident, calm and focused to succeed. Truck driver training provides you with the support and training you will need. You will learn the complete process necessary to drive a truck, pass your exam and begin working.

Two Primary Tests

To receive your license after completing trucking school, you must pass two primary tests. The first is theory-based, the second involves practical skills. The theory exam consists of two parts you must pass before beginning your training for practical skills. As a truck driver school student, you can schedule the theory-based test at any time. You can split the sessions or take them together. Our recommendation is taking both sessions together including:

Multiple Choice

The first part includes 100 multiple-choice questions. You must demonstrate the general knowledge you learned in truck driving school for driving practices and general highway safety.

Hazard Perception

The second portion is hazard perception. You will watch 19 videos while looking for 20 potential hazards. You will be given 20 questions regarding the information contained in the videos. In Mobile, AL, a score of 85 percent is required to pass the first part. You must achieve a score of 67 percent to pass the second. You are unable to proceed with practical skills training until you pass both parts.

Although you can take both parts as many times as you need to pass, if you focus on your truck driver training you have a good chance of passing the first time. Once your trucking school training is complete, you must pass a two-part exam. You will take both parts at an authorized testing facility during one session including:

Driving Skills

You are required to drive a truck under tester supervision. You will receive specific instructions from your tester to determine your driving skills including braking, cornering and backing.

Practical Demonstration

To pass your practical demonstration, you must show you understand the legal requirements for regulatory compliance and safety. The five modules encompassed are vehicle loading, illegal immigrant trafficking, walk-around safety checks, cargo securement and emergency situation assessment. Completing your exam may require as many as two hours.

If you receive a citation for any serious faults or more than the maximum of 15 minor faults allowed, you will not pass your test. Everything on this exam is covered during your driving classes. You will then be given 100 questions. You must answer 80 correctly.

The Keys to Success

In order to pass your theory exam, you must know the information you learned during truck driver training. The practical demonstration portion requires even more knowledge. You will be taught all of the information you need to pass during your truck driving school. The approach used will enable you to remember the information you are taught. Everything will be fresh in your mind when you take your exam.

During your driving classes, you will learn how to use the information you have been taught. You will be using this information while driving as opposed to simply reading from a book or manual. Reading about something is very different than performing the actions required. You will develop your skills before you take your final exam. You will be practicing for all exam phases before your actual testing.

You will be provided with high-quality software enabling you to answer a lot of practice questions to prepare you for the theory-based test. You can also use the free resources available online to answer hundreds more questions to make certain you are prepared. During your training for practical skills, you will receive encouragement to practice while driving.

The more time you spend practicing behind the wheel, the more your skills will improve. If you are confident in what you have learned in trucking school, there is a good chance you will pass your exam on your first attempt. For this reason, you will receive encouragement when you are performing well. In all areas where you appear weak, you will receive additional training and instruction.

You will have the confidence necessary to pass before you take your final practical exam in addition to the knowledge required for success. You will be taught how to remain collected, calm and cool during your training process to eliminate fear and anxiety. When your mind is relaxed, you will have the ability to make rational and clear decisions during your testing sessions.
